How to start a JDG — step by step

You can register a sole proprietorship (JDG) online for free. Below is a simple path — from login to day one. Links go to official Polish government portals.

Before you click “Start a business”

Prepare these on a note — the wizard will ask for them:

  • Business name — must include your first and last name (e.g. “Anna Kowalska IT Services”).
  • Home address and business address (they can be the same, e.g. your flat).
  • Start date — today or a later day.
  • Main PKD code (what you mainly do) and optional extra codes.
  • Tax form: ryczałt, flat tax, or the progressive tax scale.
  1. Create a Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany) if you do not have one

Profil Zaufany is your electronic signature for Polish offices. The easiest way is via online banking or gov.pl.

  2. Go to biznes.gov.pl and choose business registration

Open the government portal, sign in via Login.gov.pl (Trusted Profile, bank or e-ID) and choose sole-proprietorship registration. The system walks you through the CEIDG application.

  3. Fill in the application: business data and PKD

Enter the name, addresses, start date and PKD codes. The main PKD is your primary activity — you can add extra codes for later.

You do not need separate trips for NIP and REGON: CEIDG registration also feeds the tax office and GUS.

  4. Choose your tax form

This is one of the most important decisions: it affects how much you keep. If unsure — compare options in the calculator first, then return to the form.

    • Ryczałt — usually simpler; the rate depends on the type of services.
    • Flat tax — a fixed rate on income.
    • Tax scale — brackets, possible reliefs and joint filing.
  5. Register with ZUS in the same application

CEIDG registers you with ZUS as a payer. Separately you must enrol yourself for insurance — easiest right in the CEIDG wizard.

If you start with “ulga na start”, for the first 6 full months you usually pay only the health contribution (no social). Enrolment uses ZUS ZZA with the right code.

If you do not enrol at registration — you have 7 days from the business start date.

  6. Check the data, sign and submit

Read the summary, then sign with Profil Zaufany (or e-ID / qualified signature) and submit. A signature alone is not enough — registration finishes only after sending. You should get a submission confirmation (number / status). An unsigned draft does nothing.

  7. After registration — first days

    • Create / check your PUE ZUS account — contributions and correspondence live there.
    • Decide whether you enter VAT immediately (not everyone must). CEIDG often lets you file VAT-R at once.
    • A business bank account is not always mandatory, but it helps separate company payments.
    • Note deadlines: ZUS (usually by the 20th) and PIT advances / ryczałt per your tax form.
